Seminar Topic: Political History of Higher Education and Research in South Africa

Presenter: Robert Kriger
Robert Kriger is currently the Executive Director of Special Projects at the National Research Foundation (NRF). He has been with the NRF since its inception and launch in 1999 and served in various capacities including Head and later Executive Director of International Relations and Cooperation, Manager and later Director in the Office of the Chief Executive Officer.

The seminar seeks to contextualise the historical challenges of more than a century of higher education and research in South Africa by placing these into the associated, broader and formative socio-political developments since the establishment of the first university, the creation of the Union of South Africa through to that of the ‘Bush Colleges’ created by the apartheid state.
