Applications are invited for 2 Post Doctoral Fellows under the DST/NRF Research Chair on Innovation Studies at the Institute for Economic Research on Innovation (IERI). The purpose of the post-doctoral fellowships is to encourage imaginative research on at least the following areas: co-evolution of agriculture, mining, energy, manufacture and services; indigenous knowledge systems; information and communications technologies for development (ICT4D) including bridging the digital divide; innovation and culture; innovation and democracy; innovation and the informal sector; nanotechnology and sustainable development including bridging the nano-divide; renewable energy systems for sustainable development; science, technology, innovation for development (STI4D); and innovative technology infrastructures and knowledge to stimulate African integration, including trans-national linkages, consumer-producer interactions, regional economic communities, and other processes and dynamics like the African Union.

Candidates are encouraged to submit proposals on how the generation of knowledge, the practice of innovation and building of local capabilities can promote African integration and development. Candidates are further encouraged to engage with emergent technologies and also with the convergence of information, computers and communication technologies, biotechnologies, cognitive technologies and nano-technologies. Research on the application of specific technologies in addressing the pressing challenges of development in Africa in the context of countries facing simultaneous and multiple overlapping crises with respect to economics, food, energy, health and climate crises is especially encouraged. Further research on new and original approaches and perspectives on technology infrastructure for putting Africa unity first is also welcomed.

Applicants must process an D-Tech or PhD, preferably in a multidisciplinary field related to science, technology and innovation for development (STI4D) in relation to some aspect of South African development in particular and Africa in general. They should also submit a 5-page research proposal, with research question, methodology and a three year plan that includes how they intend to undertake the literature review and field research.

Minimum Qualifications:
Recent D-Tech or PhD in an inter-disciplinary field related to Science, Technology and Innovation studies.

Minimum Experience:

  • Academic experience in the Science, Technology and Innovation fields.
  • Exposure to public agencies and private enterprises.
  • Exposure to the development stakeholders and multilateral institutions.

Specific Training/skills:
Excellent written, oral, communication, presentation and computer skills will be required.

Other requirements:
Successful candidate will be expected to do teaching and supervise.
